Walter Carl Mickens Sr., 89, passed away peacefully at home, on May 31, 2025, surrounded by loving family members. He was born on March 17, 1936, to Louis and Lillian Mickens in Galveston, TX.
Walter attended school in Hitchcock, TX. He worked for the City of Alvin, for Moody Compress in Galveston, and he owned a Sanitation and Trucking business.
In 1950, Walter met Gloria Fay Jones. They were married on October 14, 1953. Walter was a caring, supportive, loving husband to Fay for 48 years until she passed. Walter and Gloria resided in Galveston County with their children, Walter Carl Mickens Jr., Darryl Wayne Mickens, Cedric Lynn Mickens, Roland Eric Mickens, Arlisha Kay Mickens, Patricia Fay Mickens, and Evelyn Nicole Mickens.
Then he met and married Lydia Porras. They were married for 22 years. He was also a caring, supportive and loving husband to her until her death in 2024.
Walter dedicated his life to Jehovah and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in October 1944. Walter was a faithful publisher of God’s Kingdom in the Hitchcock Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He devoted his time to reaching out and teaching others about God’s Kingdom. Close to his heart was the scripture found at Proverbs 22:6 which states, “Train a boy in the way he should go; Even when he grows old he will not depart from it.”. Walter treasured his relationship with Jehovah God dearly.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed gathering with family and friends, singing, dancing. He was an enthusiast for all things dealing with trucking, working on and fixing things, and creating things. And he was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was a devoted father, brother, and friend.
Walter is preceded in death by his father Louis Mickens Sr., mother Lillian Mickens, by his first his wife Gloria Fay Mickens, his second wife Lydia Porras Mickens, his children, son Walter Carl Mickens Jr., his daughters Patricia Fay Mickens Babbs, and Evelyn Nicole Mickens Barb. His grandson Antawn Barb II. His brother Louis Mickens Jr., sisters Mildred Henderson, Elaine Shead, and Carrie McClurkin.
Walter is survived by sons Darryl (wife Marie) Mickens Sr., Cedric (wife Cynthia) Mickens, Roland (wife Anna) Mickens; daughter Arlisha Kay Mickens, and his stepdaughter Jennifer Johnson. His brother Malvin Mickens, sisters Edna Mitchell, and Mary Ann Neal. Sons-in-Law Jessie Babbs Sr. and Antawn D. Barb I. Along with his grandchildren, Kendrick, Erica, Justin, Monqueescha, Jarnaii, Darryl Jr, Markell, Cassandra, Jerron, Cedric, Jessie, Jr & Eian. And his devoted friend of many, many years, Dean Britton. Along
