Sis. Katie Gladys Noel Obituary
“Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” Proverbs 31:31
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Sister Katie Noel, who left this world on December 19, 2024. She was born on August 5, 1927, in Cameron, Texas, to the late Lonzie and Mary Ann Martin Leath. The oldest daughter of her mother, who passed away when Katie was young, she was raised by her grandparents, Noah and Lu Anna Martin, and her aunt, the late Katie Martin. Her early years in Cameron shaped her into a devoted daughter, sister, and compassionate caregiver.
Katie was the oldest of four sisters, two of whom, Audry Redd and Mary Thomas, as well as her four brothers—Noah Leath, Otis Leath, Major Leath, and Grady Leath—predeceased her. She is survived by her beloved sister, Cora Leath Browder (Barry) of Dallas, and her brother, Lonzie Leath, also of Dallas.
A proud graduate of Prairie View A&M University, class of 1950, Katie earned a nursing degree that would take her to the forefront of healthcare in Texas. She was the first African American student to complete clinical training at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, breaking barriers and setting an inspiring example for future generations. After her graduation, she moved to Texas City and married Joseph Noel, her late husband, with whom she shared a loving partnership.
Katie's nursing career began in 1951 at John Sealy Hospital, where she found a deep passion for psychiatry after completing specialized training. This passion led her to a long and distinguished career in the psychiatric field, where she made a lasting impact. She worked tirelessly, except for a brief two-year period in medical surgery, and in 1962, she transferred to the newly built Mainland Center Hospital in Galveston, where she was promoted to Supervisor of the psychiatric ward. Katie retired after 32 years of dedicated service to her profession, leaving behind a legacy of care and commitment to her patients.
Throughout her life, Katie remained a faithful Christian and devoted member of Westward Church of Christ in Galveston. She cherished her church family and was actively involved in numerous church activities, including supporting the Bible correspondence course and always sharing her love for the church with others. Her pastors and fellow members were a source of great comfort and joy to her, especially during her illness.
Family was the heart of Katie’s life. She adored her children and grandchild and was known for her love of cooking and bringing relatives together. Her famous pineapple coconut cakes and sweet potato pies will forever be cherished in the memories of those who had the pleasure of tasting them. Katie’s nurturing spirit and devotion to her loved ones created a strong and lasting bond that will continue to inspire future generations.
Katie’s life is celebrated by her children: Daughter, Cheryl Noel Lewis (Clifford); Sons, Charles Noel (Doretha) and Ronnie Johnson; and her beloved Grandchildren, Gabrielle (Gabby) Noel and Ashley Lewis. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who loved her dearly.
The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation to Debra Shiloh, George and Annette Williams, Brother and Sister Zacharie, Richard Jenkins, Shaunique Allen, Jackie Johnson, Sister Loreta Jones, Sister Glenn Blanchard, Nikki Jackson, Karen Newsome, Sister Ruth Looney, and Katy Martin for their unwavering support during Katie’s illness. They also extend gratitude to James and Bertha Campbell and the brothers and sisters of Westward Church of Christ, whose devotion and kindness were invaluable during this time. Devoted brother-in-law Uncle Johnny Thomas (Gibsland Louisiana)
Katie’s life touched many with her kindness, strength, and unwavering faith. Her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her, and she will be deeply missed.
Rest in peace, Katie G. Leath Noel—faithful servant, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and beloved sister. You will forever be remembered and loved.
