Rogers “Van Dike” Porterie, Sr. Obituary

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the Lord upholds him with His hand.     Psalm 37:23-24 (NKJV)

Life’s Journey

Rogers Porterie was born May 5, 1947, to the late Lama & Vival Porterie in Marksville, Louisiana. At an early age, he gave his life to Christ joining Greater Macedonia Baptist Church where he was baptized by the late, Rev. S.A. Anderson.

He was educated in the La Marque Independent School District. He attended Lincoln High School, class of 1966. He was an active member of the track team.

Rogers was a hard worker and dedicated many years of service as an employee of Union Carbide (Dow Chemical). He later retired from Oil Tanking in February 2015, as a Terminal Operator.

Rogers had a great love for his family and friends. He expressed his love through laughter. He always had a funny story or joke to tell, a true “Life of the Party.” He always had a strong desire to spend time with his family. Prior to his departure from this earthly life, he was in the process of planning a gathering on Lake Road, where he grew up, for all his family and close friends.

On November 20, 2023, God called His angel home. As he crossed over, he was united with his father, Lama Porterie; mother, Vival Taylor; maternal grandparents, Ernest and Sadie Barron; paternal grandparents, Mayo and Rebecca Porterie; brother, Russell Porterie; sister, Evelyn James and son, Rogers Porterie, Jr.

Rogers leaves a legacy of love in the hearts of his children, Angela Michelle Porterie, Kimberly Porterie, Monique Porterie, Brandi Bell, and Jazmine Porterie; grandchildren, Tyrone Britton, Tamara Britton, Gwennisha Britton, Julius Johnson, John Porterie, Mary Landry, De’Ashley Porterie, Justin Smith, Jonathon Smith and Briauna Porterie; aunt, Jackie Hodge; nieces, Sonya Porterie and Monica Jackson (Troy); nephew, Michael James; best friends, Rev. Aulvey “Soup” Campbell and McKinnley “Gaw” Fletcher; and a host great-grandchildren, cousins and friends. Finally, he leaves behind his loud and talkative, pet parrot, “Blue.”
