McKinley Smith, Jr. Obituary
The greatest gift was sent from the heavens above on a cold winter morning — a shining star entered this world.
McKinley Smith Jr. was born in Texas City, TX, on December 26, 1952, to the late McKinley Smith Sr. and Evelyn Alcorn Smith. His arrival, just one day after Christmas, was the best gift anyone could ask for.
McKinley accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Greater Macedonia Baptist Church. He held a deep love for God and was faithful in paying his tithes. In his youth, he found joy in trail riding and attending rodeos. With a caring spirit and charismatic charm, he attended La Marque Public Schools (Lincoln) and graduated from La Marque High School’s newly integrated class of 1971.
In 1973, McKinley united in holy matrimony with Janice Brooks, and from that union, one child was born. Though their marriage was brief, their mutual respect and love for their child remained steadfast throughout life.
In November 1975, McKinley married his forever love, Wanda Goree Smith. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with four children.
A masterful player in the game of life, McKinley took immense pride in his work ethic. He served as a chemical operator at Monsanto/Solutia for over 30 years until his health began to decline. His dedication to his family was unmatched — even when work kept him from certain events or special occasions, he never failed to show up in ways that mattered. His children and grandchildren could always count on him, no matter the circumstance.
McKinley was the life of every gathering, known for his love of dancing and singing. Yet, he also treasured quiet moments spent watching westerns and cop shows. Monday nights were sacred, as he cheered on his favorite football team — America’s Team, the Dallas Cowboys.
A shining star, a great team player, and a devoted man — McKinley was an exceptional worker, a loving husband, a cherished father, and an adored grandfather.
He is preceded in death by his parents, McKinley Sr. and Evelyn Alcorn Smith; his paternal grandparents, Nancy and Hallie Smith; his maternal grandparents, Eli and Pearl Alcorn; and his beloved sister, Gwen Sims.
McKinley leaves behind a powerful legacy — lovingly remembered by his siblings: David (Mary), Sandra (Rodney), Henderson, and Stanley (Barbara). His memory will live on through his five amazing children: LaShunda, Austin, Theron, McKia, and Adras. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, each of whom carries a piece of his legacy — one built on love, laughter, hard work, and an unshakable devotion to family.
The brightest star in the sky will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
