Lynn Morris Obituary

On October 23, 1955, in Port Arthur, TX, God blessed Joseph, Sr. and Louisa Charles Morris
with their second son. He was reared in Port Arthur, where he received his secondary education
and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1974 with honors.  At the age of 6, Lynn accepted
Christ on the grounds of Booker T. Washington Elementary School when God assured him that
he would be his father after his parents divorced.  Later, he united with St. Paul United
Methodist Church.
Lynn always had a strong work ethic.  As a young boy, he had two paper routes.  During his
teenage years, after school and on weekends he worked at Poole’s Vacuum Cleaner Repair
Shop and Scatter Brain’s BBQ Pit.
Upon graduation from high school, Lynn began his post-secondary education at Prairie View
A&M University.  While at PV, Lynn worked as a tutor helping countless students, one being his
wife Gladys whom he met the first day on campus.  In December 1977, he received his BS
Degree in Electrical Engineering and marched with the Centennial Class in May 1978,
graduating with honors.  Lynn accepted a job with Litton Industries in Canoga Park, CA. Later,
he relocated to Houston and received a Master’s degree from the University of Houston-Clear
Lake and enjoyed a storied career in the Aerospace Industry for nearly 40 years.  He was the
recipient of many awards and accolades.
On May 23, 1981, Lynn married the love of his life Gladys Pikes.  They were blessed with two
wonderful children, Candace and Justin.
Lynn was very active in the PVAMU National Alumni Association (NAA).  He served as president
of the Johnson Space Center Chapter of the NAA for numerous years. In 2009, he was elected
as the 36th President of the NAA, serving 2 terms.  One of the highlights of his presidency was
establishing the “1901 President’s Club” to aid in providing financial stability for the
organization.  He was a member of the NAACP.  Lynn had an outgoing personality and never
met a stranger.  He was also very organized, a leader, and an advocate for education.
Additionally, he was witty, candid, and had a clever sense of humor.
In 1982, Lynn joined Mt. Carmel Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. C. H. Foy
and in 1994, he was ordained as a deacon. He was a founding member of New Beginning
Church of League City where he served as a deacon, church treasurer and finance department
chair for many years, and a Sunday School teacher.  He also enjoyed checking on the elder
church members.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife Gladys Pikes Morris, children: Candace Morris and
Justin Morris (Valerie), siblings:  Paulette Jackson, Joseph Morris, Jr., Broderick Morris, and
Lola Charles; sisters-in-law Sherri Morris, Betty Patton, Emily McKnight, Bertha Bonton (Calvin),
and Sandra Davison (Allen); brother-in-law Clyde Pikes, Jr. (Sherlyn), and a host of other
