Harold Dean Murphy, Sr. Obituary

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is
laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me that
day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2 Tmothy 4:7-8

Harold Dean Murphy Sr. (Aka B. Skull) 84, was born on August 6, 1940 in Galveston, Texas to Trudie Mae
Williams-Murphy and Clark Murphy Jr. He was educated in the Galveston public schools and attended
Lincoln High School where he graduated in 1958. After High School he attended Texas Southern
University before being enlisted in the United States Navy. He was married to Shirley Gillis-Murphy who
preceded him in death and from that union had 4 children.

Upon his return from the Navy, he played professional football with the Toronto Rifles and the Quad
Cities Raiders in the Canadian Football League 1965-1968. When he returned home, he began playing
with the Galveston Hurricanes Semi-Pro Football team. After his athletic career ended, he worked for the
Cotton Concentration, the Galveston County Sheriff’s Department, Monsanto Chemical Plant and later
began his own business Murphy’s Bail Bonds. He was also a Counselor for the Hitchcock Independent
School District and Commercial Truck Driver.

He loved sports but football was his most beloved and he continued to enjoy the sport by coaching the
Little League teams for the Hitchcock Red Raiders and the La Marque Tigers organizations for many years
coaching teams of each of his grandsons in the process. He enjoyed traveling to various sporting events
with his brother Emmett, especially Track and Field. Harold was always involved in his children and
grandchildren’s lives and made it a priority to support them in everything that they did. He was a family
man, but his support did not stop with his family. He was always in support of the youth in the
community and provided guidance to whomever needed it. He never met a stranger and had numerous
friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley Gillis-Murphy, son Harold Murphy Jr., sister Helen
Murphy-Singletary, niece Sharon Murphy, grandson Jarrett Dawsey, and great granddaughter Jaliyah
Bryant.
