Evelyn Taylor Sharpe "Mother Sharpe" Obituary
Evelyn Taylor Sharpe was 94 years old and died on November 19th after a brief illness. She was born to the late Alberta Jones of Nashville, Tennessee. She was raised by her mother and she was often cared for by her Aunt. She was affectionally called Mother Sharpe by all.
Mother Sharpe, met and fell in love with Seth Sharpe, Sr., who was also a native of Nashville. To their union three sons, Seth Sharpe, Jr., Juan Sharpe, and Reginald Sharpe, two daughters, Seleta Sharpe and Brenda Sharpe were born. She worked as an elevator operator in Nashville at National Life Insurance Company. After the family moved to Texas and resided in La Marque, she worked in private home care and in later years was provider care for several clients. Mother Sharpe was a very industrious woman and loved to sew, loved to do carpentry work at home and church, plant her flowers, and refurbish things.
While living in Nashville, Mother Sharpe was saved and joined the Church of God in Christ. She was a faithful member and devoted her life to living a holy life and also being sure she raised her children to know God and obey the doctrines of the church. She would eventually join La Marque Chapel Cogic under the leadership of Pastor Allen Joseph Hines where she and her family were faithful until his death. Her family was very talented musically. Evelyn herself sang many melodic songs under the anointing of God and also played the piano. Because of Mother Sharpe and her husbands’ musical capabilities members of her family are songsters, play musical instruments and write music and record. Some her sons became deacons at the church and her daughters sang in the choir, training their children musically and they too became faithful in their walks with Christ. She always loved the Lord and loved the Church of God. Mother Sharpe worked at her local church arduously to find anything she was able to do to maintain the edifice and was avidly committed to winning souls to Christ. She had her outreach via telephone ministry, and she would serve in different ministries such as, the we care ministry, a prayer warrior, nursing home ministry, choir minister and was busy in anything she do for the church. After Elder Hines died and her new spiritual leader of the church was Elder Harry E. Allen and she was always faith to his leadership and guidance in all ministries. It was Elder Allen who appointed her as the Mother of the church. She was loved so much and respected by the membership at the church.
Mother Sharpe had many friends and relatives that she would encourage and inspire. She was definitely interested in people less fortunate and would help provide food and clothing in the ministry at the church.
Evelyn’s pride and joy came from her children and their children. She loved family gatherings. She had a love for cooking when she was younger and would entertain her pastor and family. She loved to talk on the phone to family and friends.
Mother Sharpe is preceded by her mother, Alberta, her husband, Seth Sharpe, Sr.; her twin babies; her daughter, Seleta “Tina” Bush; son-in-laws, Barry Bush and Willie Lawrence.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Seth (Dorothy), Brenda, Juan (Trisha), and Reginald (Ann); grandchildren, Tina, Lisa (Sonny), Robert (Regina), Louis (Alex), Quinn (Delores), Crystal and Christy, Reginald Sharpe, Jr., and Brittany; great-grandchildren; step-grandson, Eric (Tonya); step-granddaughter, Deandrea; a great stepson; four step-grandchildren, and one step-great grand; special nephew, Ricky Petty of Nashville; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Our church family has been graced with the many anointed songs that she sang and we will definitely miss her songs. One of the many was “I don’t know what you came to do, but I came to praise the lord.” This is her story, a woman devoted to saving the lost.
