Doris Virginia Coleman Gipson Obituary

Doris Virginia Coleman was born on September 13, 1962, in Opelousas, Louisiana, to loving parents Mitchell and Judy Snowden Coleman. She relocated to Galveston, Texas at the age of five.  She was raised in a home filled with faith, love, and music.  Doris was educated in the Galveston Independent School System, graduating from Ball High School in 1981.

Doris met the love of her life, Jeffery Gipson.  Together, they shared their love for each other and the art of dancing.  Their enduring love glided across many dance floors in Galveston County.  The two of them kept Bourbon Street’s dance floor hot, dancing and “twinning” with their matching clothes.  When her favorite song “Blow The Whistle” was played, you could not stop her from turning the party out, blowing her WHISTLE loud and clear….

Doris dedicated over 15 years of service to the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) as a manager in Dietary Services.  She was a woman of many talents, working as a kitchen beautician, doing braids, and also sharing compassion as a caregiver until her health failed.

Doris’s smile would light up a dark room, and she kept you encouraged by always having a smile on her face.  She loved to dance and blow her whistle.  She was a loving and devoted wife, mother,  and grandmother, who loved spending time with her family and her “gamma boy”.

Surrounded by her loving family, at 7:44 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, 2025, Doris peacefully slipped from time into eternity.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Mitchell and Judy Coleman; grandparents, George & Rosa Coleman, Lawrence Snowden, Willie (Papa) Chisem and Maggie Snowden Chisem; brother, Mitchell Coleman; sister, Margaret Coleman; father-in-law, Precious Gipson; and brother-in-law, Preston Gipson.

Doris leaves to cherish her memory: her loving husband, Jeffery Gipson; her daughters, TeQuilla Coleman and Jumetria Coleman; grandson, Larry Champion, Jr.; brother, Jimmy Coleman (Cynthia); sisters, Pearl, Amy, Ella, and Maggie (Larry).  She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, along with many relatives and friends.

Doris’ deep love for her family will be cherished always, and her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched.
