Charlie Matthew Davis was born on September 17, 1944 to William and Elizabeth Davis. Charlie was the 6th son and the 10th child in the family. Charlie was affectionately known as “Sugar Jugger”. He attended Ashwood Union Church in Ashwood, Texas. After moving to Van Vleck, Texas he attended The Church of God of Prophecy in Van Vleck, Texas with his mother. He went to OH Herman High in Van Vleck, Texas in his early years until he moved to La Marque, Texas.
Charlie worked for years at Retired after over 50 years of working in Industrial Construction from Laborers International Union of North America. He also was a Commercial Cement Finisher and Independent Construction Contractor and then went into business for himself as a Masonry worker and handyman. He also was a Commercial Cement Finisher and Independent Construction Contractor. He was honored by the National Rodeo Association in 1975 as a Champion Bareback Horse Rider. This will be soon noted in the Black Cowboys Hall of Fame in the State of Texas.
He was a cowboy legend and had awards to prove his skills, he was in the Black Cowboy Hall of Fame. He loved to ride bareback horses in the rodeo and occasionally some bulls riding. He dearly loved hunting from squirrels to deer and any-thing in between he would run upon. Charlie was very good in math, you could ask him a question about figures and he quickly would figure it in his head correct and you would need a calculator to make sure it was correct. He met and married the love of his life Ms. Lizzie Long. Charlie and Lizzie were blessed with four sons combined: Bennie Lee Scott (Katrina), Johnnie Lee Scott, Dwight Davis and Charlie Davis, Jr.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lizzie Davis, parents, William and Elizabeth Davis, sisters, Ollie Mae Minifee, Errie Mae Booker, Delois Mitchell, four infants brothers, and Elijah Davis.
He leaves to cherish a devoted son: Bennie Lee Scott (Katrina), Johnny Scott, Dwight Davis, and Charlie Davis Jr.; four sisters, Evangelist Nellie McGruder (Bishop Hugh), Lenora Foster (Minister Thomas), Pastor Reda Runnels (Pastor Vernon) , and Pamela Gaines. Two brothers; Milton Cockrell (Pourchia), and Herman Davis. Grand children: Latisha Scott, Benniesha Scott, Aaron Scott, Shakinze Scott, Byron Scott, Tameka Guillory Davis, Angie Batts, Breona Scott, Baraka Scott, and Johnny Scott Jr.; 22 Great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and a host of friends.
