Andrew “Sporty” Smith Obituary

 

Andrew was born to Effie and Eugene Smith on May 30, 1937, in Galveston, Texas. He was one of five children born into the loving Smith family. He was educated through Central High School in Galveston, Texas. 

Andrew was united in marriage to Joyce Ann Mills, this union was blessed with one child.  He accepted Christ as a young adult and joined Greater New Hope Baptist Church in Dickinson, under the leadership of Pastor Frank Celestine.  Andrew served faithfully in several ministries under the leadership of Pastor William H. King, III. He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, Male Choir, Adult Choir, Trustee, Food Drive, New Member Orientation, Vacation Bible School, Property Manager, Yard and Maintenance, and much more.  He was a diligent employee of Clear Creek ISD for 30 years before retiring.  Andrew was a noble, strong, devoted father and grandfather.

Andrew leaves to cherish his memories: his daughter LaSandra Smith (Webster, Texas), four grandchildren: Ashlee Parker (Titus) Alyssa Phillips, Andrew Phillips, and Andre’ Phillips. Two great- grandchildren: Tamari Parker and Kai Cobbs; two Sisters, Dr. Betty Anderson Gooden (Dallas, Texas); Melody Verrette Watkins. One brother Alfred Verrette (Houston, Texas). Devoted in-laws, Vickie Verrette (Texas City), Curtis Mills (Missouri City), Lillie Williams (Clemon), Thelma Moore (Willie), a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and Greater New Hope Family.

Preceding him in death were Joyce Ann Smith, Effie Gatson, his brothers Robert Smith, Frank Nelson, John Verrette Jr., Jesse Verrette, Eddie Gatson, and James Gatson. Sisters: Laura Smith Simmons, Bessie Verrette Carter. Niece Sherry Nelson, Nephew Marlon Hill, In-laws: Alberta Mills, Curtis Mills Sr., Eugene Mills, Larry Mills, Shirley Nelson, and Milton Gooden.
